As a company that relies on wood and natural resources, we are conscious that the Planet is our biggest partner. We integrate sustainability practices in all aspects of our business and wish to make the right choices to protect the future.
To become a sustainable role model company that creates positive impact to People and Place.
To achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Our Net Zero 2050 aspiration capitalises on the maturity of our ESG (environmental, social & governance) practices. We strive to build the best products, with reduced carbon emissions and zero waste. We hope to use our business to inspire and innovate solutions for global environmental concerns and secure long term value for our company.
To navigate our path to Net Zero, we have adopted a new mindset and embraced the circular economy business model. We have moved from a linear ‘take-make-waste’ approach to a closed-loop model that prioritizes moreefficient use of resources, and a regenerative approach to business. We are rethinking how products are conceptualised, how we can build them so they are more durable, how we can eradicate waste streams, and how, at end use, we can transfer them back into the supply chain to be reuse multiple times.
Circularity is a core strategy embedded
throughout our business.
Weng Meng’s products are made primarily from wood and natural resources. We support sustainable forestry practices
by purchasing timber from companies that have been certified and comply with environmental legislations set out by
national and international regulators. We undertook the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) certification in 2004 and
the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certification in 2014. We insist that our products
come from forests that are being regenerated, where biodiversity is maintained for future generations.
At the same time, we are constantly scouting for new materials, particularly renewable and recyclable materials that
are already in circulation. Materials that not only minimizes waste, but diverts waste from end-of-life to become
productive inputs.
One such innovation by Weng Meng is our latest product, LC+
. LC+
recaptures the lost value of waste from the palm oil
industry, and converts it into a productive resource for our door business. Through product innovation initiatives, we
have successfully reenginered and remanufactured discarded oil palm trunk into a sustainable and durable door core
material.
Our company invests heavily in research and development. We are continuously developing innovative technologies for
the production of sustainable products. We give special attention to the optimal utilisation and processing of materials.
We evaluate the environmental impact of our products and their components from the initial concept stage through to
end-use. We ensure that we get full value out of resources used, including the efficient recovery of chemicals, water and
energy.
At Weng Meng, we are continuously on the lookout for greener materials. We have converted our standard Sandor
product coating to water-based or UV-based coating. More than 99 per cent of our production involves the use of
water-based glue. These efforts have reduced our chemical waste outputs, with benefits for the environment.
We also ensure that we are utilizing energy to its maximum efficiency, subscribing to renewable energy sources where
possible. We have implemented the use of solar energy with NEM 3.0 approval @ 1 mega watt. Our dust collecting
system is using the SKF system which is partially mechanical and noematic resulting in greater energy savings.
We further minimise our environmental footprint by introducing efficiency in not just our manufacturing but also in our
distribution processes. Our office building windows are fully tinted with energy saving window films and most of our
lighting have been switched to LED or energy saving bulbs. We also organize our transportation routes to minimize
energy requirements, whilst maximizing transport loads.
As a circular business, we are forced to think in a regenerative manner about how we build our products so that they last longer, are more durable and can be easily repaired or refurbished over time. With long-term thinking and technological innovation, creating profitable products with minimum or zero waste is increasingly possible. We do this by factoring circularity into the product design, manufacturing and logistics processes rather than treat waste as an afterthought. At Weng Meng, we are already considering what will become of our doors after the user discards it. We are looking at at a buy-back programme and technologies to repair, reuse and recycle these doors for as long as possible.
As we move beyond merely minimising our negative impact and gearing ourselves to become
net positive, we are constantly in search for new projects and/or business opportunities that are
aligned with our vision. We believe that by working closely together with partners, within and
beyond our industry, we can discover, develop and deliver the best value for our products.
Collaboration is key for resilience in our circular economy strategy. Essentially we are creating
a virtuous loop where one company's waste becomes another's raw material input. It is a push
for industrial symbiosis, where companies across industries connect on new levels to create
loops that are mutually beneficial.
